Sculptured or bevelled – which frame style is right for the project?

Standard casement windows system come in two frame shapes, and the names change slightly by manufacturer but the choice is the same one:

  • Sculptured, also referred to as decorative, curved, ovolo, or “S” profiles, is a rounded, traditional frame face, closer in feel to a timber window. These suit period and heritage-style properties.
  • Bevelled, also called chamfered, a flat, angled frame face for a cleaner, more contemporary look. Suits modern new-builds and renovations.

A further recent variation to the uPVC window offering is the Flush Sash Casement Window, this is a more traditional cottage style window that can also have mechanically jointed corners to look more like a timber joint, rather than the normal diagonal weld. If it is this style of window you are after click here.

The structural performance, thermal, security and weatherproofing is generally identical between the two shapes within the same manufacturer’s range; the choice is purely aesthetic.

How chambers make a window energy efficient

Every modern uPVC frame is hollow inside, divided into a series of separate internal cavities called chambers, rather than being a single solid extrusion. Each chamber traps a pocket of still air, and still air is a poor conductor of heat – so the more effectively a profile is chambered, the harder it is for warmth to travel from the inside face of the frame to the outside face, or the cold to travel from outside to in.

Chambers do more than insulate, too

  • Reinforcement chambers – these house the galvanised steel (or, on some systems, recycled composite) inserts that give the frame its structural rigidity, particularly on larger openings
  • Drainage chambers – these carry away any water that gets past the outer seals, via concealed weep vents
  • Glazing chambers – these hold the sealed unit securely in place against the internal beading

More chambers, and better-designed ones, generally mean a lower U-value (the measure of how much heat escapes through the frame, lower is better) without needing to fall back on more expensive glazing to hit the same energy rating.

Profile specifications

Although the windows look similar to each other to the naked eye, there are differences in frame depth (although most are 70mm which is the standard size of most windows that will be removed), number of chambers, gasket colour, sealed unit size range and thermal properties. These can be summarised in the table below.

Why installers keep coming back to SevenDay for casement windows

Most trade counters are linked to their parent fabricator and will only offer one or 2 profiles that are manufactured by their own company. SevenDay is England & Wales largest independent window trade counter network, part of a group that procures circa 2,500 frames every week – this gives us the strongest buying power which in turn enables us to offer the most competitive deals.

Furthermore our team are all highly industry experienced and are on hand to advise and support you through the purchase of your windows.

We offer eight alternative uPVC profile systems side by side means a job spec is never forced to fit whatever’s the alternative counter offer – we match the window to your projects needs. Whether it’s the heritage look of a sculptured or the sharpest possible sightlines on a bevelled Profile SevenDay can supply you with the profile your clients desire. There’s always someone on hand to help settle on the right spec for the job.

We also offer FREE storage, FREE delivery to site if required and also FREE skip use and recycling facilities for the disposal of the old products removed.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the practical difference between sculptured and bevelled frames?

It’s almost entirely aesthetic, a sculptured frame has a rounded, traditional profile face, while a bevelled (chamfered) frame has a flat, angled one for a more contemporary look. Thermal and security performance is generally the same across both shapes within a given manufacturer’s range.

Does a higher chamber count always mean a more efficient window?

Chamber count is one factor in a window’s U-value, but not the only one – glazing specification, spacer bar type, and how well the chambers and seals are designed all matter too. A well-engineered 5-chamber profile can outperform a poorly designed 6-chamber one.

Can these profiles take triple glazing?

Yes, all ranges above can be specified with triple glazing for improved thermal performance, typically bringing U-values down further than the double-glazed figures quoted here. The depth of the double or triple glazed unit is imperative to know to ensure the correct glazing bead is supplied with the window – your SevenDay expert can assist you with this.
